About Hawai’i Tropical Botanical Garden

Hawai’i Tropical Botanical Garden

Located just north of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawai’i, the Hawai’i Tropical Botanical Garden is a unique outdoor destination that preserves and exhibits a wide variety of indigenous and exotic tropical plant species. Established in 1977 by botanist Dan J. Lutkenhouse, the garden spans 40 acres along a steep, 1,000-foot valley stretching from waterfalls to the Pacific Ocean cliffs. This diverse landscape includes rare native Hawaiian flora, palms, orchids, heliconias, and fruit trees from around the world. Visitors experience a naturalistic setting with walking trails winding through lush foliage, waterfalls, and scenic ocean views. The garden’s location in a humid, tropical climate allows it to support an extraordinary diversity of plants while maintaining a tranquil atmosphere that feels removed from urban life. The garden plays an important role in plant conservation and education, emphasizing sustainability and the preservation of rare species. Key landmarks include the rainbow-waterfall area, native Hawaiian plant sections, and the coast-side overlook. Recreation here primarily involves self-guided walking tours along well-maintained paved and uneven trails, providing botanists, photographers, and nature enthusiasts ample opportunities to explore a tropical botanical environment rich with vibrant color and texture. The site does not permit camping or large group events, making it a peaceful day-use destination accessible year-round.
